The J.W Anderson Experience

Two weeks ago, I temporarily interned at the J.W Anderson studios in Hoxton the day before their show, scheduled on Menswear Day. Was excited when I got contacted back for the immediate position, but it was one of the most fucked up and intense experience I've been through. After a long day at CSM, headed off to the studio apartment finding myself wondering around the flat trying to find someone to sort me out, but struggled getting by all the productive interns and unamused models. Twas hard getting noticed but eventually got shoved into a packed room creating tassles to sewing embroidery onto a knitted apron apparently work 900 quid, while being advised by other interns not to study fashion. Funsies? Worked till early morning without any food, but I knew I would be heading off to Somerset House for the show. As soon as I got there, didn't actually give a shit, just wanted to go home. Worked backstage organising the collection, dressing models and taking as much vitimin water as I could possibly urinate. Leaving Somerset House felt so good, but got fucked over again and had to go back to the studio to clean. Pissed. But yeah still an interesting experience but the designer was actually a twat. Talented, but a prick. He may of been stressed, still a cunt tho. But he might of been a cool guy if I didn't meet him before his show. Below are some secret photos I took backstage while not doing my job.

The Mad Hatters Assistant

Haven't blogged for more than a while but been quite busy doing shit and relaxing this summer and now recently started art college. Blah. But yeah half the summer ago I started interning for headwear/millinery designer Nasir Mazhar, who's shown at London Fashion Week for the past four seasons and debuted his work on the runway last season at Fashion East. Aswell as producing his own creations, he has made headwear pieces in the past for other designers like Gareth Pugh, Henry Holland, Richard Nicoll and Romain Kremer. He also has commisoned pieces for Madonna and Lady Gaga, most notably the golden orb hat which he regretibly hates to be known for, but takes into consideration that she has money.

Since interning, I've been late everyday (only living 15 mins away), smoked so much more and taken piss-take lunch breaks, but yeah been doing alot of different jobs from deliviers, graphics, cleaning metal but mainly toiling. I've learn't so many new skills and gained great insite into the fashion industy. Nasir himself is a really cool guy who is strongly inspired and obsessed with black culture, constantly listening to old skool Hip-Hop whilst sparking a zoot every 5 minutes. Funzies. Lastly, below are some sneaky phonetos of the studio.

Nick Gentry

With the death of tech-materials such as floppy disks, cassette tapes and VHS tapes, CSM graduate Nick Genrty collects mountains of the 'memorabilia of the previous generations' and recycles them to create art. Since the production of the 'diskette' was put to an end, Gentry buys them online in order to create his 'alternative collaged' canvas'. Gentry finds this cheaper than to buy traditional art equiptment.

The shape and detail of the collaged tech-materical contributes to the effect of the painting, moulding robotic-like detail to the portrait from the un-painted areas of the tech material.

Nick Gentry's work is being shown at Absorb Arts, Summer Open Studio, 10-28 Millers Avenue, Dalston, London E8 2DS on Friday 2nd - Sunday 4th July 2010

London-based jewellery and accessories designer Dominic Jones set up his company in 2008 with the help of friend and now business partner Alice Dellal, launching his debute collection in Spring 2009, recieving critical acclaim for his nature inspired pieces. Growing a cult-fan base, his work has been worn by the likes of Beyonce, Rihanna and even Vivienne Westwood. The success of his designs has gained him the British Fashion Council New Generation Award twice and recently commisioned his designs to accessorise Thierry Muglers A/W10 show.

I've been a fan of Dominic Jone's designs for a while now and haven't met anyone that knows of his work. Some of his pieces remind me of accessories for superheros or weapons disguised as jewellery. I've been keeping the knuckleduster claw ring in my 'want list' for a while now but isit really worth 455 quid (maybe?), or do I even have the will power to save or purchase it. I would be too scared to wear it outside just incase police would confiscate it, thinking it's a weapon. But yeah keep your eyes on him.
